FINNISH LAPPHUND CARE
HEALTHLappies are a long lived breed and with good care and nutrition, most will reach at least 13 years of age, with 14 to 15 years not an uncommon age for a Lappie. Given that the breed was developed in some of the harshest conditions on earth, most Lappies are tough and resilient dogs.
There are only a few health conditions that can affect the Finnish Lapphund. As a general rule, the incidence of problematic health conditions in the Lappie is very low. It's the mandate of FLCC members to be responsible with their breeding practices to reduce and minimize the incidence of hereditary diseases within the breed. |
TRAININGFinnish Lapphunds, although most known for being a family dog, are also traditionally a working dog. As such, they are an active breed, who thrive when given the opportunity to work with their owners.
All Lappies should have at least some basic obedience training while young to ensure they have the best opportunity to fit in comfortably with their owner’s lifestyle. After that, there are a number of different activities and dog sports that Lappies can get involved with, and there are many across Canada who have participated in some of these sports. |
